Senior Research Scientist

Cytonus Therapeutics is seeking an energetic and highly motivated scientist in San Diego, CA to support our therapeutics development program for treatment of a broad range of disorders including but not limited to the central nervous system, oncology, inflammation, and general cell-based protein therapeutic delivery. The successful candidate will be working in a creative and dynamic environment, working closely with internal staff, collaborators, and contractors. Candidates must have demonstrable experience in mammalian tissue culture, molecular genetic engineering, engineering protein biologics, and immunology. Experience with protein purification/chemistry and preclinical mouse models of disease are strongly desired.

Job responsibilities

Responsibilities will generally revolve around engineering stem cell lines for protein production, supporting protein production efforts, and executing on quality control and cell-based assay development. The candidate will also be involved in drug discovery efforts and disease screening using cell-based in vitro assays, FACS, and mouse disease models. Specific duties can include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Design and express recombinant proteins and peptides using eukaryotic and/or prokaryotic expression systems in vitro and/or in vivo.
  • Perform small to mid-scale protein expression, purification and characterization.
  • Optimization of cell and protein expression and function through molecular engineering approaches, ELISA, Western blotting, and FACS analyses.
  • Design and test novel cell-based and protein biologics using mouse models of disease.
  • Initiate, execute, and manage protocol creation, evolution, and documentation of experimental procedures and results.
  • Routinely track and document results in laboratory notebooks, databases and technical reports.
  • Analyze, summarize, and present experimental results to manager and other team members (including formal presentations and promotional material)
  • Ability to work in a collaborative and dynamic interdisciplinary environment consisting of biologists, chemists, mathematicians, statisticians, and engineers.
  • Quickly adapt to evolving research needs, rapidly acquire new scientific knowledge and stay informed on new technologies.

Required education and experience

  • PhD in life sciences or chemistry or the equivalent with 2-4 years of postdoctoral training or equivalent, preferably in molecular and cellular immunology. Training in cancer biology and/or immune oncology would be beneficial. Salary will be commensurate with experience and training.
  • 2+ years experience in basic mammalian tissue culture.
  • Highly proficient in gene and protein engineering and biologics characterization using Western blot, SDS-PAGE, ELISA, Immune cell-based activity assays, and FACS analyses.
  • Demonstrated abilities to work independently and creatively to solve critical research problems.
  • Excellent collaboration, organizational, communication (oral and written) and multitasking skills.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours to meet project timelines and travel abroad to conferences and meetings with industry experts.
  • Strong evidence of scientific productivity. This is NOT limited to publications alone.

Preferred secondary skills and experience of interest

  • Knowledge of large-scale molecular therapeutic drug development.
  • Stable cell line generation and clone generation/selection using FACS sorting etc.
  • Grant writing experience.
  • Experience with animal models of disease and evaluation of therapeutic intervention.

The ideal candidate will have

  • Strong background in engineering cell lines for protein therapeutic delivery.
  • Strong background in FACS analyses and data interpretation and presentation.
  • Ability to proactively seek out and implement new technologies to improve expression and purification of proteins for biochemical and structural efforts.
  • Excellent computer, scientific, and organizational skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and attention to detail
  • Ability to organize and oversee one or more research technicians.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, self-motivated, adaptability, and with a positive attitude.
  • Ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, keep accurate records, follow instructions, and comply with company policies.
  • Knowledge of state-of-the-art protein analytics techniques.

This position is full-time and salaried. Hours may vary as needed for research demands.
